Presence versus Presents

The best gift of this holiday season is to spend time with the one you love.  I know we all go an extra mile this season and use money to buy gifts but nothing beats spending quality time with those dear ones.

My Love

My childhood memories of this holiday season entails more of the things we did together as a family not necessarily the gifts I got. The tradition or let me call it the family norm of Maina’s Family was to receive a new outfit every Christmas. There was no feigning surprise or checking under a tree, to see if Santa brought you something.  We knew the truth,  Mum and Dad went shopping on Christmas eve and got the six of us what would be our next Sunday best for a whole year. Considering,  the weight of matter, the choice was not easily made and so they would spend hours shopping.  Looking back at how precise and accurate they were, I feel greatly indebted to them. On Christmas morning we would all dress up and attend the Christmas service.  I  loved Christmas service because it was the only service in a year we got driven to church as a family.  All the other sundays we got up and walked to church for either Sunday school or those teens service and mum and Dad would drive to church later for second service with the baby. But Christmas Service was no separation it was a family service.

Now you know why at Glorious Power Church we do not hold sunday school or Tweens and Teens on Sundays but on Saturdays, so that no child will feel what we felt on Sundays. To me Sundays are family Days.

From the service things just got better,  mum and dad allowed us to participate in the cooking and Christmas was always the day we ate more than we needed. From the era of record player to cassette player music and dance always crowned the day.

To the Maina’s Family it was not about the gifts it was always about having time together as a family.  Last year I  shared with you a tradition that mum introduced later on when God continued to bless us.

We learn from our parents mostly through observation and just like the other tradition we borrowed, we can borrow this one too.

During my years of youth and Teens ministry, the words used as the title of this article have been said more times as a form of a complaint. As a parent I understand we may not be able to be there 24/7 for the children but just like my parents did we can create special memories where they have our undivided attention.

As we give gifts let’s add time to the receiver. The gift of time is not only wonderful to children but to all people, your spouse, your friends, relatives, neighbors.

Merry Christmas and Remember to give not only gifts but Time.

Merry Christmas

Sarah’s laugh, or that of skepticism.

“A time to weep, and a time to laugh”

(Ecclesiastes 3:4).

I.   The laughter of unbelief, Genesis 18:11-15;
Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.  Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my Lord being old also?  And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?  Is any thing too hard for the Lord ? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.  Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.
Genesis 18:11‭-‬15 KJV
Luke 8:52-56;
And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth.  And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead.  And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise.  And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat.  And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
Luke 8:52‭-‬56 KJV
Christmas Traditions

A Merry Christmas to you all my

friends is what I wish you. I am grateful for the gift of love and family. Christmas season has always been a special day to me from my childhood. My parents traditionally bought us a new outfit every Christmas for as long as I can remember. On the Christmas eve we would all try on our new clothes to ensure they fit. On Christmas Morning, dressed up and jubilant we would attend the Christmas Service. After church we would head home prepared to eat all kinds of delicacies and food prepared by our mum.
I remember one Christmas that my mum invited the street kids to our house. This time they had bought clothes of different sizes and the street kids showered in our house got a change of clothes and joined us for the Christmas party. We had so much fun playing in the compound with these kids. I remember pausing,looking around and noting that the street kids are just like us. Before that I always feared them and made sure that I avoid being close to them when we went to the market.
Unfortunately after Christmas they had to go back to the streets but my parents assured them that they can always come over on Saturdays to shower and have meals with us.It became our new tradition.
That Christmas changed my perspective.
What is your Christmas tradition? Do you have memories you can share?

Merry Christmas

The joy of Remembering the birth of Christ is complete in knowing that He fulfilled his purpose by paying our penalty for sins.

Have you accepted him in your heart and made him Lord over your life?
As we celebrate this season let’s remember that Jesus is the reason for the season.
If you remove the reason then it all becomes meaningless.
There were several wonders that surrounds the birth of Christ.
1. Born of a virgin.
The conception was of the holy spirit. It had never been heard before and has never happened after. Mary was in grave danger of being stoned for immorality but from Joseph his fiancee to all the family members they all believed her story. She spoke the truth about the Angel’s visit and the words spoken to her. The God who orchestrated this convinced everyone who heard the story and thus spared Mary from the ridicule and shame.
2.Barreness was eliminated
Now Elizabeth and Zechariah were old and barren. I bet they had already given up the hope of ever being parents. They were in Continuous Service in the temple. Offering sacrifices for others and fulfilling their priesthood duties. But in God’s calendar Jesus needed a predecessor and they were the perfect couple to fulfill this purpose. Mary needed someone who can process the news with too. So when the angel give mary the words he also shared with her about Elizabeth being six months pregnant. The lord was concerned with Mary support system as she carried out the great assignment.
3.Boldness Displayed
I always Imagine what was going on in Joseph’s mind. Did he feel betrayed and cheated? He must have loved Mary so purely. He planned on not embarrassing her, dumping her in privy.He had not spoken to anyone about his plans but as he was contemplating on how to go about it, the Lord appeared and defended Mary. Surely our thoughts are not hid from the Lord!
I admire Joseph boldness believing in the word of the Lord and embracing Mary as she was.
4.Boundaries Significance
and he made of one every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation;
Acts 17:26 ASV
https://bible.com/bible/12/act.17.26.ASV
Imagine that God determines the places we will be born and also the time. In fulfilling all the prophecies concerning the birth of Christ, Mary and Joseph took a journey to fulfill a census call. All this for Jesus to be born in the right place according to the scriptures. Yeah Bethlehem and on a merger to fulfill the prophecy.
I have pointed out this wonderful scenarios to Express the divine planning for the birth of Christ. You are special to God and for our sake everything was articulated efficiently. There should be no place for doubts concerning our Lord Jesus Christ.
Believe in Him.
Confess your Belief
Embark on living a life of liberty.
Merry Merry Christmas
